Undersea Art beneath the Waves

Explore the mysteries of the ocean featuring sirens, mermaids and the African Mama Wota together with sea creatures real and imaginary from across the world. Artists considered are Edward Burne-Jones, John Tenneil and Marc Chagall.

Lecturer: James Russell. James is an art historian and exhibition curator. Major exhibitions include Ravilious (2015), Edward Bawden (2018) and Tirzah Garwood: Beyond Ravilious (2024), all at Dulwich Picture Gallery. For Hastings Contemporary he has curated Soutine|Kossoff (2023) and the wide-ranging trilogy Seaside Modern (2021), Seafaring (2022) and Undersea (2025).

Working with the Ingram Collection, he has curated several major survey exhibitions on modern British art, including Century: 100 Modern British Artists (Hastings Contemporary 2016). He has worked with institutions including The Royal West of England Academy, Ferens Art Gallery, Towner, The Higgins Bedford and The Holburne Museum.
