The Country Houses of Shropshire

We will be joining with The Arts Society Wrekin for a Zoom lecture by Gareth Williams from the Weston Park Foundation about his forthcoming book on the country houses of Shropshire. It sounds a really interesting topic and Gareth is an excellent and knowledgeable speaker.

June 2021 finally sees the publication of The Country Houses of Shropshire, a significant and long-awaited study of Shropshire’s varied country houses, which considers the history of over three hundred houses. Shropshire is the largest English inland county, and has a wide variety of important landed country houses, with owners from diverse social groups, with links to trade in Liverpool, Manchester and London as well as the local gentry. The book is not simply about the houses but also about the people who lived in them, their artistic tastes and their estates, which are considered as an integral part of the character of each house. Important sporting associations, fine and decorative art collections, and also important guests and social networks all bring the stories of the houses to life. In this talk, the book’s author Gareth Williams gives a preview of some of the houses’ histories – some familiar and others not – illustrated with just a few of the 690 illustrations which are used in the book itself.

This is a Zoom lecture. The link will be sent to TAS Wolverhampton members when we receive it from TAS Wrekin.
